I have always wondered how Wi-Fi works on an airplane on the ground and in the air. How can all people connect to the Internet on a single WIFI? Wouldn’t it be like a big international affair? To make all users connect to the same network at the same time, different technology must be applied for an airline to provide passengers with high-speed Internet access. This type of technology is using Microwave Link. For example, if you want to send data from your computer, you will do it via Radio Waves. But currently, satellite communication is used to send data from one place or one country over the world. In this report, I will introduce you to new technology: Microwave Link and GSM link.

How it Really Works?

The technology used to provide in-flight Wi-Fi is called Ku-band satellite communication. It works by beaming signals from a satellite traveling in geosynchronous orbit at 35,000km above the equator to an antenna installed on the plane. The antenna is roughly the size of an average laptop and weighs about 3kg. It receives the signals from the satellite and converts them into radio frequency waves that can be used by passengers’ devices.

While most airlines still use the former method (3G/4G LTE), some have started using the latter method (satellite connection) as it’s seen as more reliable and faster than traditional terrestrial networks.

If you’re like me, you spend a lot of time on planes. I travel for work and for pleasure, so I spend about 20 hours a week in the air. That means that I need to be able to work on my laptop while traveling and that means having good internet access. Mostly I travel on those flights that have Delta Wifi because it keeps me login every time and has good speed.

I’ve taken dozens of flights over the past few years and have tried every major airline’s in-flight Wi-Fi service. Here are my favorites:

Virgin America

Virgin America has one of the best Wi-Fi offerings in the industry. Their service is fast and reliable, making it easy to stream movies or catch up on email while flying across the country (or across the world). I often use them when I need to get some work done during my flight, but don’t want to pay $20 for their entertainment package.

JetBlue

JetBlue offers free access to Google Mail and Google Calendar through their “Fly-Fi” program, which is nice if you need an email address that works from anywhere in the world (not just from your computer). The Fly-Fi service also allows you to download files from Dropbox and share links on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. If you don’t have a personal hotspot, this can be a great way to stay connected while traveling.
